WHY CANINE DETECTION?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why Canine Detection?

For years, dogs have been used very effectively and trusted with the detection of a wide variety of things such as drugs, bombs, fugitives, cadavers and mold to name a few.

Canine detection is very cost effective and will drastically reduce pesticide usage.  Why treat the entire building or home when you can isolate the infested area and treat that specific location. A bed bug dog is highly skilled in pin pointing the precise location of bed bugs thus decreasing the amount of effort needed to treat bed bug infestation and minimizing the cost of the treatment and the amount of chemicals required for treatment.

A well-trained sniffer dog is able to identify the presence of a single bed bug.  If you are about to hire a bed bug detection dog, you should consider the following:

Ensure that the dog is properly trained to discriminate between live bugs and viable eggs from evidence left over from an old infestation (fecal spotting, caste skins, empty egg shells, and dead bed bugs).  If the bed bug dog is unable to do this, it becomes much more difficult to distinguish between new “active” and old infestations.

Ensure the bed bug dog has not been cross trained to detect multiple scents. This will make it difficult to interpret the dog’s alert. Make sure the handler knows the difference when the dog is alerting to the scent of bed bugs or the scent of mold, if in fact the dog is trained to do both.

A trained professional inspector/exterminator will only detect visible signs of bed bugs in a room with an accuracy rate of about 20%. To find activity inside walls, baseboards, even under carpets, a room would have to be stripped down to the bare walls. A properly trained canine can detect bed bugs even inside walls with 95%+ accuracy.
